This assertion is apparently contradicted by many discoveries of science for relieving and palliating human suffering and misery, for softening human cruelty, for moderating injustice, and for crowding back the many phases of superstition. But all these results are only the shallow margin of the problem; they are, in a way, but accidents; they do not make a man to feel that he knows the world, that he knows humanity, that he knows himself.
