A Theory of the Microdynamics of Occurrent Thought offers the present theory (T2) as based on a first-person, reflectively-based analysis of presently occurring thoughts (i.e., occurrent thoughts (OTs)) and proposes that each one consists of a specific combination of ten or fewer micro phases possessing phenomenal contents so fleeting that most are unaware of their existence. The theory specifies the “movements” of an operating “I” (i.e., central executive) in, as, and among these phases in the service of “processing” their contents by fleetingly “becoming” them, followed by one of several possible transitions of attention that bring about different degrees of their objectification. The relatively fixed sequences of the different phases of occurrent thinking, along with an operating “I”’s immersion in and “face-up” or “face-down” surfacing from their phenomenal contents, form a structure that carries and drives “on-line” cognition, supporting the view that OTs play a causal role in human information processing. Two categories, two forms, and fifteen different types of OTs are defined by the theory presented in this book based on their respective phases and on the transitions of an operating “I” therein. Drawing on his own extensive research and many fascinating interviews, Coltrane explodes many of the common myths about shared parenting, provides first-hand accounts of men's and women's feelings in two-job families, and reveals some innovative solutions that couples have developed to balance job and family commitments. Readers will find an insightful discussion of precisely how and why family life has changed, what forms it may take in the future, and what new kinds of fathers may be on the horizon. Given the current economic situation--with two-job households now the norm--and the gradual ideological shift away from restrictive gender roles, more and more couples will find it both necessary and desirable to share the workload. More important, Coltrane suggests that as fathers participate more fully in raising their children and performing traditionally female household tasks, men will themselves be transformed by the experience in profoundly positive ways and American society as a whole will move closer to true gender equity.

In this book, Philip Birch examines the procurement of female sexual services with a focus on the personal and social aspects of men who procure such exchanges and offers insight into the demographics amongst men who purchase sexual services, alongside an analysis of the reasons why they purchase sex. This book brings together existing literature with analyses of new data to develop a multi-factor model reflecting men’s procurement of sexual services and demonstrates the complexities surrounding the procuration of these sexual services in exchange for money.

The book considers what contribution the understanding of the personal and social aspects of men who procure sexual services has on re-theorising the purchasing of sex in the 21st Century and will be of interest to academics and students involved in the study of criminology, criminal justice, social policy, law, sociology, sexuality and gender studies.
